Specialized Stumpjumper Evo!!

Some of you might have spotted that I’ve been running round on something a bit special – I’m happy to be one of about 10 people in the UK on the new Specialized Stumpjumper Evo!

After 5 awesome years riding Bionicon bikes (cheers guys for some awesome memories!) it was time to spread my wings, and the Evo was exactly what I was looking for. After years of riding & racing, I’ve identified that I’m put together in a bit of a wierd way, at 5’9″ with the upper body & reach of someone nearer 6 foot tall, and short legs. The Evo in S3 size is the first bike I’ve ridden that feels really spot on right from the outset.

As is always my way, I’m pathologically unable to leave things “as is” so it’s already been heavily worked to turn it from a 150mm super slack trail bike into an absolute killer of an Enduro race bike.

The changes I’ve made have resulted in a 170mm front & rear travel beast, the BB is now a bit higher at 336mm, so still super low, and head angle is a sniff under 63 degrees. For such a massive bike (1271mm wheelbase!), it doesn’t feel huge.

So – onto the important question. How does it ride? Bloody fast! It’s winter here in the UK, so the maiden voyage was made on a wet, slippery trip to my local DH tracks that form part of a loop I use to train on. I kept my Garmin in my pocket to ensure I didn’t ride to data, and bear in mind I’ve been resting since EWS Finale with very little MTB time. I was staggered to see that I’d set a couple of PRs on climbs, and on the DH tracks (which are all steep, off camber and techy) I was within a couple of seconds of my fastest ever summer times – in the wet! It didn’t feel that fast, and I was definitely riding within my limits, so I’m intrigued to see just how fast I can push this thing once the weather improves and I’m back up to speed myself.
